Empire’s Borders I is based on Chen’s experience applying for an U.S. non-immigrant visa to attend an art exhibition in New Orleans. “European audiences may not have much idea of what it was like to live in the first island-chain of anti-communism under United States’ influence. To me it has been living on the borders of an empire.”
The Western Enterprises is the name of the operational institute of the CIA in Taiwan. The film is about Chen’s father's experience and soldiers defending United States’ interests.
Through his films, photographs, performances and installations, Chen Chieh-jen (*1960 Taoyuan, TW) engages with Taiwan's history of martial law and the effects of globalisation on the lives of marginalised people.
