HAMBURGER KUNSTHALLE X PRIDE WEEK 2024
Christopher Street Day (CSD) is celebrated around the world every year. The movement dates back to the events of June 1969, when police officers in New York stormed the Stonewall bar on Christopher Street, triggering resistance from gays, lesbians and trans people.
In art history - and thus also in the collection and exhibitions of the Hamburger Kunsthalle - there are artists who have made an important contribution to the visibility of the LGBTIQ* community (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Inter, Queer) with their work. Queer content and stories can also be found in many artworks. Artists and works have initiated discussions, presented new life models and established alternative ideals of beauty and continue to do so today.
On the occasion of CSD in Hamburg, also known as HAMBURG PRIDE, PRIDE WEEK* will take place throughout Hamburg from July 27 to August 4, 2024. It forms the thematic centerpiece of HAMBURG PRIDE.
During PRIDE WEEK, the Hamburger Kunsthalle is hosting a series of exciting and queer events for visitors of all ages (in German).
The »FAMILIENZEIT« invites queer families on a creative journey through 700 years of art history. The dialogical tour »WE'RE NOT JUST A TREND: ART HAS ALWAYS BEEN QUEER« addresses queer perspectives in art history and encourages discourse. The »DRAG GUIDED TOURS« with changing drag queens and kings offer unique insights into the collection of the Hamburger Kunsthalle and enable both philosophical excursions and participatory moments.
The grand finale of PRIDE WEEK is the big CSD demonstration on Saturday, 3 August at 11:55 a.m., passing directly by the Rotunda of the Hamburger Kunsthalle.
The Hamburger Kunsthalle wishes everyone a HAPPY PRIDE!
* Associations, initiatives and groups from the LGBTIQ* community will be organizing lectures, discussions, performances, parties, readings, talks and much more during this time - PRIDE WEEK is as diverse as queer life in Hamburg.
Throughout the history of art, there have always been artists whose work has made an important contribution to the visibility of the LGTBQ* community - including in the collection and exhibitions of the Hamburger Kunsthalle:
Artists and artworks have sparked discussions, presented new life models and established alternative ideals of beauty - and continue to do so.
We regularly offer dialogical tours on queer perspectives in art or one-off tours through our collection with changing drag queens and kings. You can find the dates in our calendar.
