The Hamburger Kunsthalle is delighted about its latest acquisition: the sculpture Zonder Titel [Untitled], 1993 (1993) by the internationally renowned Belgian artist Berlinde De Bruyckere, was purchased with funds from the HERMANN REEMTSMA FOUNDATION.

The artistic work of Berlinde De Bruyckere (born 1964, lives and works in Ghent, Belgium) focuses on the existential themes of being human: closeness and distance, love and pain, vulnerability and resilience. Accordingly, the artist uses materials in her sculptures that can be interpreted in ambivalent ways. In the case of Zonder Titel, 1993, it is a used blanket: it symbolizes protection, security, and warmth, as well as hardship, illness, and concealment. Fascinating and eerie at the same time, the larger-than-life figurative sculpture stalks on stilts made of old fire extinguishers: its dancing navigation becomes a tense balancing act.

This new acquisition wonderfully complements Berlinde De Bruyckere’s sculpture Archangelo II, 2020, which has been in the collection for some time and is permanently on display in the Old Masters collection rooms.
