Lingchi is inspired by a photograph of lingchi torture (death by a thousand cuts) taken by a French soldier in China in 1904 or 1905. “In the contemporary context, Lingchi in Chinese no longer refers to torture in the past, but also refers to repetitive, monotonous, and endless labor.”

The Route is based on the historic Neptune Jade incident and the global worker’s movement. Chen invited members of the Longshoremen’s Union of the Port of Kaohsiung to perform a simulated strike.

Through his films, photographs, performances and installations, Chen Chieh-jen (*1960 Taoyuan, TW) engages with Taiwan's history of martial law and the effects of globalisation on the lives of marginalised people.
