100 Years of the  Study Hall
of the Department of Prints and Drawings and the Library

The Study Hall of the Department of Prints and Drawings (Kupferstichkabinett) and Library will celebrate its 100th anniversary at the end of October 2022. To mark this event, we are offering a two-day pop-up exhibition providing an overview of the history of the Study Hall as well as the collections of the Kupferstichkabinett, the library and the archive of the Hamburger Kunsthalle.

The works on display from the Kupferstichkabinett span sheets that are closely linked to the history of the collection and were created or came into the collection in 1922, for example, the year the Studiensaal was opened. Among them are seven sheets from the series Krieg by Käthe Kollwitz (1922), the lithograph Kleine Welten II (1922) by Wassily Kandinsky or Pablo Picasso's Frauenkopf im Profil (1905).

Also on display are highlights from the library's rich collection, including one of the three medieval manuscripts, an incunabulum, historical prints and artists' books. The exhibits show not only the function of the library as a research library, but above all the importance of the valuable collection. The exhibits from the archive exemplify the diverse holdings of the collection, ranging from the correspondence of the first director Alfred Lichtwark (852-1922), letters of famous female artists such as Anita Reé (1885-1933), historical exhibition views from the picture archive and curiosities from the history of the Hamburger Kunsthalle. Paintings by important patrons such as Ernst Georg Harzen (1790 - 1863) or the former director Alfred Lichtwark round off the show.

Two guided tours (in German) will take place as part of the pop-up exhibition:

Friday, 04 November 2022, 3 - 4 p.m., with Dr. Andreas Stolzenburg.

Sunday, 06 November 2022, 12-13 h, with Katharina Therese Gietkowski.

Participation is included in the admission fee, registration is not required.
